Ghana sits in a comfortable middle: properly licensed, taxed lightly, and easy to pay from. It is one of the more straightforward markets on the continent for a player.
The Gaming Commission of Ghana licenses casinos, sports betting operators, route operations and lotteries under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Both land-based and online operations fall under it. Licensed operators display their Commission registration, and the Commission has acted against unlicensed operators and non-compliant advertising.
International casinos serving Ghanaian players are typically not GCG-licensed. Same trade-off as everywhere else on the continent: more games and bigger bonuses, no local body to complain to.
In 2023 Ghana introduced a 10% withholding tax on betting and lottery winnings. It was unpopular with players and operators alike, and it was abolished in the 2025 budget. As things stand, winnings are not taxed at the point of payout.
Tax policy here has changed twice in three years, so treat any figure — including this one — as needing a check against the current budget statement before you rely on it.
MTN Mobile Money is the dominant rail, with Telecel Cash and AirtelTigo Money behind it. Locally licensed operators integrate directly with all three, and deposits are instant.
International casinos generally do not accept MoMo. Ghanaian players on offshore sites usually route through a crypto exchange — MoMo to USDT, USDT to casino — which adds cost and counterparty risk to every deposit. Weigh that against the bigger bonus you were chasing.
Sports betting leads, as it does across West Africa, and banker-style lotto has deep roots that predate online gambling entirely. Crash games have taken hold quickly. Slots are a smaller share of play than in North or Southern Africa.
Ghana’s licensed operators are a genuinely reasonable option — the regulator functions, payments are frictionless, and there is currently no tax on your winnings. The case for going offshore is weaker here than in markets where the local option barely exists.
